Learn Forward
Free tutoring and practical support that helps children and young people access education, stay in education and make the most of it.
What’s on offer
Three kinds of support, one goal: keeping learning within reach.
Some young people need help with a subject. Others need the things that make learning possible. Many need both.
Weekly tutoring
Free, funded weekly tutoring, online or in person, in subjects linked to a young person’s education, goals or aspirations.
Learning essentials
Means-tested support for books, equipment, trips and other essentials, bought directly by the Foundation.
Uniform support
School-uniform support twice a year for families who might otherwise struggle with the cost.
Step by step
From first conversation to weekly support.
-
Step 1
Get in touch
A young person, parent, carer, school or professional makes a referral.
-
Step 2
We talk it through
We find out what the young person needs, which subjects matter and what they’re aiming for.
-
Step 3
Support is arranged
We match them with a tutor, and arrange any essentials or uniform they’re eligible for.
-
Step 4
Learning moves forward
Weekly tutoring begins, online or in person, and we check in on progress along the way.
How it fits together
Three connected strands.
Learn Forward is about educational access and learning confidence, not just tutoring. The first pilot runs for 12 weeks, in small groups, with study-skills sessions alongside.
Learn Forward Support
Targeted academic help for learners who need it: small-group tuition, short subject interventions, revision clinics and exam preparation.
Learn Forward Hub
Free resources anyone can use: revision packs, recorded workshops, study guides, digital resources and drop-in study sessions.
Learn Forward Families
Workshops that help parents and carers support learning: revision, subject choices, exams, school communication and home study.
What support includes
Short, focused and built to last.
A learner profile
Current confidence, goals, barriers and priority subjects, so help starts in the right place.
Time-limited help
A focused intervention towards an agreed goal, rather than open-ended tutoring.
Study skills, taught explicitly
Retrieval practice, organisation, revision planning and how to ask for help.
Progress in plain language
Regular summaries that learners and families can actually follow.
Resources to keep
Study materials learners can keep using after the sessions end.
A route onwards
Clear referral elsewhere when a need is outside what we can offer.
What changes
What we’re aiming for.
Learning confidence
Learners feel more able to attempt work and ask for help.
Study habits
Each learner can use at least two effective independent-learning strategies.
Targeted progress
Progress against the specific goal agreed at the start.
Access
Families who couldn’t easily pay for support get usable help and resources.
Parent confidence
Parents and carers feel clearer about how to support learning.
Who it’s for
For any child or young person aged 4–18.
Tutoring is open to all ages we support. Help with learning essentials and uniform is means-tested, so it reaches the families who need it most.
- Tutoring: open to children and young people aged 4–18
- Essentials and uniform: prioritised for families on a low income, including those receiving Universal Credit or eligible for free school meals
- Schools and professionals can refer where there is clear financial hardship
- Support is given as items or services, never cash, and must relate to education or development
How to refer
Anyone can make a referral.
Learn Forward is launching soon and is always free. Referrals made now join our interest list, and we’ll be in touch as places open.
Does it cost anything?
No. Learn Forward is always free for children, young people and their families.
Which subjects do you tutor?
Tutoring is matched to subjects linked to a young person’s education, goals or aspirations. We’ll talk this through when you get in touch.
Where does tutoring take place?
Tutoring takes place online or in person at our community youth space, depending on availability.
Do you give cash grants?
No. Means-tested support is provided directly as items or services. The Foundation buys books, equipment, trips or other essentials on the young person’s behalf.
Who qualifies for learning essentials and uniform support?
Support is prioritised for families on a low income, including those receiving Universal Credit or eligible for free school meals. We also consider referrals from schools or professionals where there is clear financial hardship.
